chum comes prepared. He outfits his student with a vest with zippered pockets, to carry extra flies and other fishing necessities. In a backpack, he totes plastic bottles of ice, which slowly melt during the day, for a refreshing drink. He usually tucks in a few packs of cheese crackers and some fresh fruit too.

Mr. Flinchum said that when someone is learning to fly fish, first they want to catch a fish, then they want to catch a lot of fish, then catch a bigger fish, then catch a fish that is a challenge.

He said that he has found so many places to fish that he can't fish them all in a year. In another week or so, he looks forward to fishing on the Shenandoah when the white mayflies will be appearing. He knows this from keeping a fishing journal. “Some people schedule their vacations based on the hatching times of certain insects,” he said. When that certain insect hatches, fly fisherman know that if they use that certain fly, it will attract the fish. He ties some of his own flies, and also offers lessons on fly tying.
