stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The thick layers of reed or straw are overlapped, and then cut into the desired style along the edge.
He first built his birdhouses to give as Christmas presents, as a way of introducing thatch to people. When people showed a lot of interest in them, he began building lots more of them.
He says he wishes to have an apprentice to learn thatching, someone who would also help with the carpentry part of the job, but has not found that person yet.
Mr. McGhee has some large jobs lined up in the near ftiture: a gazebo in Harrisonburg, a large order of birdhouses, mailboxes, and dovecotes for Devonshire stores, of which there are several around the country, and a barn to be thatched in Austin, Texas. For the bam job, a few of his friends will come over from England to help. He expects the job to take about three months.
A Saxon hut which he built and thatched sits at the Reston Farm Market, and he has also done thatch work at the Jamestown Settlement and the Frontier Museum in Staunton.
Besides selling his work in the Devonshire stores, Mr. McGhee’s little tudors can be found at Rush River Gallery in Washington, The Apple House in Linden, The Blue Peach in The Plains, Horse Country in Warrenton, and the Comer Cottage in Middleburg.
