On New Year’s Day the Yale Russian Chorus will perform a concert at The Theatre at Washington. An a cappella men’s choir from Yale University, the Chorus sings music of Russia and neighboring republics. The repertorie spans more than 1,000 years and includes folk songs, liturgical hymns, opera choruses, and soliders’ songs.
This past September, the Chorus was invited to perform for Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the Russian diplomatic delegation at a state dinner at the White House. Among other distinguished guests for whom the Chorus has performed in recent years are Mikhail Gorbachev, Eduard Shevardnadze, and several justices of the Russian Constitutional Court. Mr. Shevardnadze was so moved by the performance that he mentioned the Chorus in his memoirs, The Future Belongs to Freedom.
