Betty Baker Hensley, sisters of Dave, Sally Keyser and myself undertook the task of cleaning the old burial ground.
Ascending the rather steep, overgrown path from the road (Route 653) to the top of the hill with all manner of tools we laid into it. Catgut briars, yucca, sasafrass and birch saplings, honey suckle and other flora indigenous to Virginia wilderness confronted us, now their enemy.
Much sweet flowed, several yelps of pain from the bitting briars did not dissuade our assaults. In a little over three hours our battle plans brought us victory and the war had been won. We had to take a couple of retreats to attend to the wounded and the famishing. After wiping sweat filled eyes, taking on some refreshment and praising ourselves thus far, we were on the down hill march. Cutting, pulling and whacking all in our path. C’est finis! Our red headed soldier had gone on before...to prepare us a victory celebration meal.
Our tools collected and loaded in the vehicles we fell in at Sally’s with appetites whetted. Sandwiches, brown beans and combread muffins, tea, coffee, and plates of other tid bits vanished as if before ravenous wolves. Patting our bellies with satisfaction and contentment, we rolled out onto the porch and sat discussing our day and otherwise just having wonderful friendly conversation.
On third Sunday, Nov. 20 at the regular meeting of the Old School Baptist at Thonrton Gap, I had opportunity to question three of the Bowen women concerning their knowledge of those buried at this cemetery. Mabel Bowen McClanahan, Mildred Bowen Frazier and Edna Bowen Canard, daughters of Oakley Bowen, had all been bom in Old Hollow. These ladies had lived within a few miles of this place and had been to several burials there. Putting all their memories together they came up with the following list, viz:
