Many a blinker or a nonplusser results from a misplaced prepositional phrase. From a report in Indianapolis in August: “The company has admitted dumping dioxin in the river during the trial.” You would think the company would have put off the dumping until the judge wasn’t looking.
Strange things happen when phrases wander off. The AP carried a feature story on sexual practices in America. “Author Shere Hite wrote that 75 percent of women married more than five years reported having affairs in response to her questionnaire.” Let’s have a look at that questionnaire!
