More complex procedures for operating the town’s water system and testing of town water will be required once the new treatment plant comes on line, Mayor Stewart Willis told members of Town Council last Wednesday night.
Curtis Crawford has substituted for Ray Pullen as the town employee who oversees the water system and maintenance projects since Mr. Pullen had an accident last fall which left him unable to work. Mayor Willis said the town held the position open in hopes that Mr. Pullen Would be able to resume the work, but that does not seem likely. Mr. Crawford is uncomfortable about working with the chemicals involved. Mayor Willis said.
He said the eyewash station has been installed and the water treatment plant has Health Department approval to hook up, but the town must arrange for the testing procedures first.
Existing procedures include adding chlorine to the water, daily testing of taps in town, and monthly tests for coliform bacteria which are done in a lab in Luray, he said. There are also quarterly tests for volatile compounds, he said.
