Several area farmers have recently asked about the benefits of using poultry litter as a source of fertilizer for crop and pasture land. Farmers looking for the most economical source of fertilizer could Find that poultry litter may be the answer.
However, you must know what you are buying it terms of the available nutrients such as N, P, and K and know the rate of application per acre in order to receive optimum nutrient benefits for the crop. These questions will be answered during a workshop scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22 in the Extension Office.
A well-managed land application plan includes a soil fertility program that utilizes litter to supply as much of the needed plant nutrients as possible.
Robert Shoemaker, nutrient management specialist for the Department of Conservation and Recreation, will address the following topics: Cost benefits of a litter/cpmmercial fertilizer program, calibrating spreaders, analyzing litter for nutrient content and crediting residual nutrients.
