• Compounding this paradox is the fact that most of these plants are self' monitoring. The DEQ often must depend on these private contractors to monitor the levels of these substances. Under public duress, the DEQ in fact rewrote its limits on fecal coliform releases from the proposed plant, so that the Route 522 bridge area downstream from the plant would be supposedly safe for human use, swimming and other water recreation.
During the last week I have been pondering this proposed plant and the goal of the Department of Environmental Quality to limit pollutants, as opposed to banning them for effluent release. This has been an especially frustrating concept to me because I have seen many alternative ways of dealing with waste water effluents, such as wetlands filtration systems, that work much more efficiently, providing not only biologically cleaned water, but also an ecosystem that promotes biological diversity and sustainability.
