most of Mr. Matthew’s training at VPI was based on the Bauhaus school of architecture. Mr. Matthews said, “The professors were influenced by the Bauhaus which had nothing to do with tradition. Now 1 am learning a lot of things I did not have a chance to leam in school. Every project is different and interesting.”
After VPI, he worked for a while as an assistant to an architectural photographer in New York who did a book on Nelson Rockefeller’s house and gardens. He also was with the Department of Defense for 11 years, in charge of school construction for the department in 19 countries. He spent six years in Germany during the 1980s in that position.
When a small building next to his house on U.S. 522 in the village of Flint Hill came up-for sale, his dream of having his own office and workspace near his home became a reality.
Now he can be there when his two children, Dorian and Whitney, arrive home from school.
With Mr. Matthews at home, his wife Jennifer has been able to follow her dream of pursuing a doctorate in nursing education. She attends classes at George Mason and is an assistant professor of nursing at Shenandoah University’s School of Health Professions. She spends a lot of time on the road, and Mr. Matthews said he does about all the cooking nowadays.
The office' renovation included a skylight and bright white walls, which display architectural drawings and photographs of many of the houses Mr. Matthews has designed. The building has had many businesses in it over the years, including a tack shop, thrift shop, and Red Cross station.
Along one wall sits his computer, with a CAD (computer aided design) system. . The CAD allows Mr. Matthews to make design changes easily, and can produce isometric drawings showing room dimensions, furniture layout, and so forth. Overlays can be made for the electrical diagram.
Mr. Matthews said that most of his clients have a pretty good idea of what they want before they see him. His first drawing is done from 1/4” to 1 ’ scale. Next, the site plan is done.
