School Budget

The School Board is taking a hard and responsible look at the proposed school budget for the coming year.

Once that board is finished with its cuts, nothing substantial will remain that is not needed to operate the schools. The Board of Supervisors does not need to try to equal the School Board’s cuts.

The only easy cuts will come from substantially reducing raises, and nothing is so likely to demoralize the teaching staff as the appearance that their contribution is not valued by the county’s governing body.

It seems unlikely the proposal to station teachers' aides on school buses will survive the budget process. Without wandering the aisles while the bus is moving, there is little aides on the buses could do to eliminate the problem ot inappropriate language and behavior anyway.

However, parents have a right to expect that their very young children will not be bullied, taunted or exposed to language and behavior unsuited to a school setting. Parents need to work with the school system to see that such things are not tolerated.
