Providing a football program and finding about $400,000 more from local taxes for the school budget were the two main topics of discussion at the School Board meeting Tuesday night.
Bonnie Lofton said she had again become involved in promoting football after being asked to help a student, B.J. Christian, with his science project on why Rappahannock has no football program.
She said B.J. had surveyed boys and found that 102 were interested in trying out for football and only 14 were not. She said they also found out that small schools can have successful football programs. "Goliath can be beaten," she said. "I didn't realize our inferiority complex was so totally unjustified."
She said once a football program was started it could be self supporting and even support other sports programs. She suggested the board consider hiring a fundraiser to raise money privately to start a football program.
