Sheriff Settle said that the benefits of the program are that "it places the child in a positive one-to-one contact with a law enforcement officer, and that it affords the child to have something a little special for those Christmas memories." It also gives them some of the necessities they are lacking.
The fund-raising for the program began three weeks ago with Capt. Jeff Brown talking to individuals and business owners about it. The goal of five children was quickly passed and grew to be enough for 12 kids in no time.
Major MacWelch said that deputies and other employees of the Sheriffs Office are donating their time and have also been contributing money. Any surplus will go into a fund for next year and a special bank account is being set up for the project. Though this year's goal has been met, donations are still welcome. Checks can be made out to "Shop With a Deputy," and should be mailed to the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office at P.O. Box 487, Washington. VA 22747.
Major MacWelch agrees that the people of Rappahannock have been very generous in their donations. "That tells you something about the people in this area," he said.
