Trooper Sumner said that there are two types of male dogs — alpha and beta. The alpha is the dominant male, fears nothing, and will back down from nothing, said Trooper Sumner. "He is top dog,” he said.
Marko is certified with the Virginia Police Work Dog Association, which includes 200 dog teams in the state; the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA), and the Virginia State Police.
Though Marko and Trooper Sumner have completed the 12 week training course, individual training still continues at Trooper Sumner's home. During training he gets food rewards. They also travel to Richmond three days.a month for additional training.
Trooper Sumner has been employed for four years with the Virginia State Police. Prior to that he spent six years as an MP in the Marine Corps.
