The River

1 am a 72 year old man, bom only a few miles from the Mattaponi River. There were nine,of us children, all.but one sister, one brother and myself were bom on a farm right on the river, just a few miles below Mundy's Bridge. My Dad used to float logs down the river to Braxton's Landing at Aylett where the Chesapeake Corp. bought them and floated them on down to West Point. At that time a steamboat came up the river from West Point and turned around at Aylett. Aylett could still be a small shipping port if the river had been kept dredged.
Just below Mundy's Bridge was a farm owned by the Lumpkins family that had a road going down a steep hill to our swimming spot called The Cat Hole. On Saturday afternoon, Mother or my sister Claire, or both, and our neighbors would all go down for our Saturday afternoon baths and swim. The current was swift so the water stayed clear and clean. What a delight!
This old river holds such dear memories for me. Just recently, my wife Marge, and 1 moved down to Braxton's Landing at Aylett, where so many years ago my Dad floated his logs to and Rt. 360 was just a two lane dirt road..
