The varsity and JV basketball teams have l and 1 records after victories over Luray at home last Tuesday and losses to Strasburg in away games Saturday.
Varsity Coach Eugene Baltimore said of the 72 to 56 win over Luray, "We didn't play well, but the kids did what they had to do to win the game. They could have played a whole lot better."
He praised two players "who stepped up" — Jeff Atkins with 28 points and Daniel Settle with 11. "Our defense let them back in the game in the third quarter," Coach Baltimore said. "They didn't come out after the half and play as well as they could. If they had stayed with the same momentum, it wouldn't have been close."
Of Saturday's 86-76 loss to Strasburg he said, "We had a real good first half. In the second half we let them take control of the game. Our biggest problem was rebounding. All five players have to rebound for us to be successful, and we were relying on our freshmen."
Jeff Atkins again led the scoring with 33 points. Eric Smith added 17 and Jason Baldwin had 14.
Coach Baltimore said the Panthers were only down by one point at the end of the first half. "We have to play four quarters of basketball." One problem the team had, he said, was that Daniel Settle was only able to play five minutes of ball because he got in early foul trouble.
