The Luray area count is one of[ more than 1,500 similar counts taken from Guam and Hawaii to Labrador, and from Alaska to Venezuela, during a two week period surrounding the Christmas holiday.
This year marks the 97th anniver-i sary of the original Christmas Bird Count, taken on Christmas Day, 1900, by an intrepid group of strollers in twenty-five locations, mostly around major northeastern cities^ Since then, this annual event has grown from its original 25 to 1,500 plus, and the total participants from 21 to well over 41,000.
The count itself is undoubtedly the biggest birding event of the year, and for most groups, it means days and weeks of planning and preparation in hopes of yielding the most extensive list possible in their designated area. Anyone interested in joining the Luray count or counting birds at their backyard feeder during the day of the count is welcome.
