For a long time I have intended to strongly and warmly compliment the people of Rappahannock County for keeping it so lovely and unspoiled, still so much like it was when I was growing up in the Gid Brown Hollow many years ago.
I have now gotten around to doing so. 1 am a supporter of the Wilderness Society, Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited, and other conservation organizations. While it is good to know that President Clinton has saved the Utah wilderness under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the legacy of the greatest American conservationist of them all, Theodore Roosevelt, it is even better to know that something closer to home is safe.
I was overjoyed some months ago (Sept. 4, 1996) to read in the Rappahannock News that much of my beloved Gid Brown Hollow was going to be protected by conservation easements. My heartfelt thanks go out to Mr. Bridges, Mr. McNear and all the other landowners who have done this, who have acted with such foresight. It proves that individual landowners can play an important role in conservation; it is not always something that a governmental body has to do.
There is not just one road to take toward the goal of preserving our natural and historical heritage. We can surely agree that these landowners are actually doing more for conservation than all the Hollywood celebrities with their sound bites, not to mention such elements as the self-righteous, destructive animal rights movement. '
