Mrs. Knuepfer. Before the county government buildings were constructed court was held in that building. Lot 21 held the first jail (spelled "goal" in those days).
A livery stable on lot 31 was another of the original log buildings in town, Mrs. Knuepfer said.
Lot 24 across the street from Mrs. Coxe's Tavern holds the famous Inn at Little Washington, but it also has a house and the Middle Street Gallery on it. Some of these separate buildings and lots were once "dependencies" for the larger houses on the lots. As separate lots they have been expanded crowding a few of the original town lots.
The Rappahannock News office is in lot 13, but there seem to be four buildings plus the ice house used as Windflower Gallery on three of the original lots.
This overall plan with generous lot sizes resulted in lots of open green spaces in the town. Whether George Washington or the General Assembly of Virginia should get credit for that will probably never be resolved.
However, current residents and visitors alike should be grateful that someone had the foresight not to crowd too many buildings into the area that became Washington, Virginia. Continued farsightedness will be needed to preserve this simple elegance.
