The plan for the Town of Washington that Franklin Clyde Baggarly said was found .among the Fairfax papers in 1847 shows a town little different than the current one.
Several of the half-acre lots have been further divided, but others have never been built on.
The intersection of Main and Middle Streets was already there in 1749, according to Kathrine Knuepfer of the Rappahannock Historical Society. It was an intersection between a road coming over the mountain at Thornton Gap, making a sharp 90 degree turn and going on to Alexandria, and one coming over the mountain from the Front Royal area and meeting it along what is now the Fodderstack Road.
Lots 44 through 46 now house most of the county government, including the courthouse, clerk's office, treasurer and commissioner of revenue's offices and the county jail. The Health Department is on lot 6, formerly the location*of a general store. Lot 47 holds the Washington Baptist Church, while lot 25 is Trinity Episcopal Church. The former Methodist Church on lot 43 is now owned by the county but used-by Ki Theatre.
