The Rappahannock News won the Sweepstakes Award for weekly newspapers with a circulation of less than 4,000 for the third year in a row at the Virginia Press Association's annual awards ceremony in Roanoke Saturday evening.
The Sweepstakes Award goes to the paper that accumulates the most points in writing, graphics and page design. To be eligible, the newspaper must get at least one point in each category. Three points are awarded for first place, two for second and one for third.
Cindy Mahan again led the Rappahannock News contingent with four awards. She won first place in the spot news photo category for a picture of the Bleu Rock Inn draped in a tent following a summer thunderstorm. She won first place in the pictorial photo category for a picture of icicles hanging on a wire fence. Those two photographs are reproduced on Page B-1.
