Remember that bread crumbs were the original offering to wild birds when the ground was covered by snow. Take that idea and try cornbread. Birds like it very much. I don't make this delicacy for birds, but I have found myself increasing amounts when I do make it Word spreads that a new delicacy is on the feeder and birds arrive quickly and from afar to tuck into crumbled cornbread.
After the turkey or chicken carcass has been picked over for soup and salad makings, run a string through the bones and hang it out for the birds. Lee Trott collects chicken bones and places them in an onion bag that she hangs near the bird feeder. Carolina Wrens have a fine time picking bits of meat off this offering. Remember to keep these offerings high off the ground. It's not wise to tempt your and the neighbor's dog too much.
Birds like any food to which butter or shortening has been added. In particular, they like stale daughnuts. Bits of cake (minus the frosting) also appeal to some birds.
Mockingbirds love raisins and will visit bird feeders for them. I hesitate to recommend this, for Mockingbirds are so aggressive they often keep all birds off the feeder in their attempts to preserve raisins for themselves.
We have never had any luck with putting out other fruit, half oranges or apples. For us, they have been ignored. I do know others who have had Red-bellied Woodpeckers come for the citrus.
