A house fire on Route 643 in Amissville last Friday brought 42 firefighters from all over Rappahannock and some from Fauquier County.
The^-house, owned by Sylvia Sanders, was "pretty well demolished," according to firefighter Clifford Clate of Amissville. Chief J.B. Carter, Jr. said that Mrs. Sanders .was able to get out of the house without injury, but there was no time to save anything. Mrs. Sanders's sister, brother-in-law and grandson also resided with her.
No one was injured, but one cat died as a result of smoke. Another cat and a dog were saved from the fire; the dog was given oxygen by Sharon Scott, once he was retrieved from the house. "If there are no humans to take care of, we will take care of the pets,” explained Chief Carter.
The call came about 3 p.m. Mr. Clate said they got to the scene within four or five minutes, but the one-story brick house was pretty well gone by the time they got there. Chief Carter said that they first tried an inside attack but had to move outside when the roof started to collapse. Clean-up continued until about 11 p.m. Twenty-one of the firefighters were from Amissville, and firefighters from Orlean covered for Amissville.
The cause of the fire was most likely electrical and may have started in the bathroom, said Chief Carter. He said that the family said they had an electrical problem in the bathroom earlier that day.
