Retired

Teachers

To Have Day

Thanks to the efforts of Delegate Tom Jackson and Ruth S. Andrews, President of the Virginia Retired Teachers' Association, retired teachers will be honored each year with their own special day.

House Joint Resolution No. 355 designates January 31 of each year as Retired Teachers' Day in Virginia, beginning in 1997. The Resolution passed both the House and Senate unanimously.

Andrews said, "We are very grateful to Delegate Jackson for sponsoring this resolution and for all his help in getting it passed. When I first approached him concerning this idea, he agreed to help without any hesitation."

Delegate Jackson said, "Ruth had a good idea, and I was glad to help. If anyone deserves a day, it is retired teachers. I truly enjoy working with them."

The VRTA plans to use this day as their statewide Lobby Day in Richmond. Andrews reports that plans for the day have been finalized and she hopes that each district in the state will be well represented.
