traffic from both U.S. 522 and 211 meet at the intersection, the count increases to almost 4,500 vehicles daily. VDOT engineers project that this volume will more than double by the year 2021.
The principle cause of the backup on U.S. 211 west is the lack of a separate turn lane available for the 1,100 cars turning left onto U.S. 522 at the Sperryville Emporium. In answer to citizens’ questions, James W. Haught, transportation engineer, Culpeper Location and Design Department, said that the proposed improvements are intended to relieve the congestion but are not expected to increase traffic volume overall.
The right of way consists of four parcels, all owned by the Miller family, and displaces no residences, businesses or nonprofit organizations.
A portion of the hillside north of the intersection will also be acquired by the state and sloped to improve visibility- tyG.
