there is early frost it will kill them. The vines do not take well to cold winters here the Armors said. They lost a “big hunk” of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in ‘96.
The Armors use what’s called a divided canopy to grow the vines. It is a series of wires set on posts with irrigation pipes attached. It is two-sided, so rows of grapes grow back-toback in a single row which means increased yields with limited land use.
It costs more to put in a divided canopy but the long range profits are better.
This year has been good so far. “You’ll hear wine makers say that ‘97 was a good year next year (and after),” David Armor said. “It was a great year for Chardonnay. We’re hoping for a great batch for our first year.”
Future plans
Eveiy year at harvest the Armors’ daughter, Adrienne, comes home with her friends and they all help bring in the harvest. This year was no different and the Armors say that for now the business will remain small.
Iburs of the vineyard are already a part of the stay but they plan to add a lot more.
The loft above the winery is being converted to a tasting room and with tasting bar.
They plan at first to open the winery about three times per year to the public and it
