The waxwings had feasted on these and the whole flock lurched drunkenly from tree to tree, from one electric line to another. I followed them with my camera and telephoto lens. I also dodged copious droppings. Our car was parked under a tree favored by the inebriated waxwings; it was besplatted purple.
I have strayed from the bright colors of October berries. The flowering dogwood, cornus florida, is known to all Virginians.
There are other species of dogwood that produce berries in a fine array of colors: one has white fruits, another produces pale blue berries, and yet another has fruits of a deep blue-black. No matter the color, birds find them acceptable travel food.
French mulberry, also known as “Beauty Berry,” produces handsome clusters of lilac, shading-to-violet, berries along its twigs.
It is a native shrub that is more common in the deep south though I have seen it inland in Virginia, where it is now being planted for its handsome fruits.
