red berries are everywhere in the northern Virginia Piedmont.
There is a deciduous holly, winterberry, that, after loosing it’s leaves, reveals clusters of bright red berries that glow at the tips of twigs. Birds like them all.
It’s not only red berries that hollies produce. Some species near the coast have black fruits that birds find just as tempting as red ones. One of these, yaupon, has the intriguing Latin name ilex vomitoria; it will be seen that this is singularly appropriate. Native Americans concocted a drink from this plant which they drank at harvest time.
It made them lose the food they had just eaten: thus they could continue eating when food was plentiful. A drink made from yaupon leaves was also used in purification rites. I recommend neither use.
