Marc Malik, presideht of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, said that some people are concerned with doing too much to roads and others want to know how to get their road on the six year plan. “I think we just saw that (with Four Springs Road).” He said that gravel roads can be a valuable asset to traffic calming, an issue that RLEP has studied in detail during the last year. “It’s not something (gravel roads) we should just get rid of.” Stonewall-Hawthome
Most of the controversy during the hearing arose over the paving and widening of Route 621, which is approved and in progress.
Citizens living there have called for a halt to the work in order to reassess what can be done to preserve the rural nature of the road and keep many of the large trees along the road from being cut down in order to allow widening of the road.
At least seven people who live along the road spoke out against the plan and said they were never informed of what was in store for their road. In fact, they said, they were told individually that no one else was against the widening and paving. They got together several months ago and found out that most of them were against the plan for the road work.
