All of his younger trees show water stress from this summer’s drought as well as suffering from a difficult spring where everything leafed out in March and then withered in an April frost. “Hundreds of our small trees were lost,” he said, “and this fall the foliage is not as dramatic as in previous years.”
The best sites for Japanese maples are in partial shade unless you are able to water the tree, and if you are, full sun is also desirable. The root system is fairly shallow making the trees more susceptible to water stress, yet also making transplanting fairly simple. Mulching is an excellent practice which protects the trees in dry times.
The trees are able to grow in less than perfect soil, although a sandy loam with a medium amount of organic matter is perfect for Japanese maples. They do require welldrained soil and do not tolerate boggy, wet places.
