The public hearing for the Six Year Secondary Road plan brought out 70 plus county residents, the majority of whom criticized the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors, the Virginia Department of Transportation or the Rappahannock News for lack of information concerning county roads.
In a continuing effort to keep citizens informed, the Rappahannock News will publish a series of articles on the county’s primary and secondary road plans, detailing plans for each road. : Articles on routes 729 and 621, U.S. 522 arid 211 have been published in the last six months. Those were roads about which residents have expressed concern. - Information on traffic calming has been covered in the paper by staff writers and by contributing writers such as Don Audette, a noted authority on the subject.
The supervisors appeared somewhat bewildered Monday at the criticism launched at them and no wonder. The plans for county roads have only been around since 1982.
During 1997, citizens have appeared before the supervisors to address issues over U.S. 211 and 522 and routes 621 and 729. The largest of those groups •numbered about 15 people.
Bob Moore of VDOT has been available at almost every meeting of the supervisors this year to answer questions about VDOTs plans for county roads.
There is also a public comment session during each meeting of the board of supervisors. The VDOT report and the public comment session are on every agenda, every month. As the supervisors pointed out, there were many new faces at the hearing. At least half of those present have not attended a board meeting this year. There does remain a certain amount of individual responsibility to seek and obtain information on an issue.
