Is the proposed expansion of NATO, formally presented by President Clinton in Europe this summer, an inevitable event?
The Friday evening library program scheduled for Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. will hear John D. Isaacs of Washington, D.C., discuss “NATO Expansion: Bad Idea, Worse Timing.”
Tb change NATO, Congress will have to approve an amended treaty and appropriate billions of dollars to make it a reality. Isaacs’ talk will enlarge upon the matters many people who are concerned with foreign policy believe should persuade Congress to reject expansion.
. Isaacs and his family have shared a place in Gid Brown Hollow for many years and will soon be enjoying the fall colors again. He is the executive director and president of The Council for a Livable World, a lobby on arms control and other national security interests.
• The council was founded in 1962 by nuclear physicist Leo Szilard who believed the nation and Congress needed to be. warned of the threat of nuclear war and encouraged to adopt policies to prevent it. The council also is a political action committee that raises funds to support Senate and House candidates based on their interest in foreign affairs.
Isaacs has worked for the council since 1978 and before that was a legislative assistant to former N.Y. Representative Stephen Solarz and a Foreign Service officer. He writes for the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists” and other publications.
