Aging fire apparatus raises additional concern for both the volunteers and town property owners. Company l’s tanker truck will require either major refurbishment or replacement within the next two to three years because the truck’s body and water storage tank are rusting out.
Roach estimated that refurbishment would cost approximately $100,000. Replacing the vehicle could cost up to $350,000. Both Roach and Spieker support replacement as a better long-term option, due to the age of the tanker. The town council pays $13,000 to Company 1 each year. Of that, $8,000 covers fire apparatus loan payments and $5,000 goes toward operating expenses.
The state provides an annual stipend of $4,000 because part of the fire station is located within town boundaries.
There are no state or federal grants available for the purchase of fire trucks. Fire chiefs and the rescue association personnel are looking to private foundations and other sources for financial support.
