Ineffective parenting is often accompanied by a low level of acceptance, unyielding restrictiveness, lack of expectations for mature behaviors, lack of or inconsistency in responsiveness, and negative involvement.
Frequently I work with frustrated parents who bring their child in so that they can be ’fixed". In my experience, there are indeed some cases in which the child is the one with the "problem".
However, in the large majority of child and adolescent cases, it is the dynamics within family relationships which are significantly contributing to negative behaviors. In summary, if you would like to see improvements in your child's behavior, it may be important to evaluate how you presently interact with your child, your parenting style, and if it would be helpful to modify your own behaviors in order to change your child's.
