We offer support and appreciation to the school staff by giving gift Rappahannock News subscriptions each year to teachers who are new to the county, providing luncheons for staff during some of their in-service training sessions, and this year helped finance the PTO’s teacher appreciation event, the Buttercup Ball.
We also sponsor and support the annual Academic Award Reception, which recognizes student academic achievement. At this year’s Reception, we presented the first annual John Sawhill Conservation and Jeff MacNelly Art grants, which allow exceptional students in the fields of conservation and art to pursue special projects.
We helped sponsor two public forums this year: “Life After High School”, which examined how recent RCHS graduates are coping with the real world of college and jobs; and joined the schools in sponsoring a forum on VA Cares, a movement to reform the inequities in state funding to some Virginia counties, including Rappahannock.
And what is the most astonishing thing about all these accomplishments? They have all been done with local funds, by local people. The support base for educational excellence in Rappahannock County is amazing.
Headwaters’ success is directly related to the importance everyone in this community, both within and outside the school system, places upon a good education for our children.
