This was in 1941 or 42 when approximately 25 soldiers in uniform arrived at Rock Mills from the United States Army, along with ten jeeps and 3/4 ton trucks. You can imagine the excitement when all this came to the county without any warning.
With permission from the land owner, they set up camp in a nearby field. They started work immediately, erecting many buildings, about eight by eight on flat rocks.
Each day they would go to each building staying only a few minutes, then on to the next building. Everyone wondered what they were doing.
After they were all checked they would meet on Wharton Hollow Road, about 500 feet from the bridge. They would gather in this beautiful green meadow which had been grazed by cattle, and play football. The local people had
