never seen such a rough game, and wondered why men were fighting over a football.
The soldiers took a liking to Mr. Sam Wharton who was about 65 years old at the time. When the game was over, they were always buying him something to eat or drink from the store across the bridge at Rock Mills. He was always there to watch them play as well as other local people.
As the summer passed the soldiers had won the hearts of almost everyone. A soldier was admired by everyone at that time because being dressed in uniform was so impressive.
At summer’s end, and when their job was completed, they tore down all the buildings they had built and departed. What was left behind was many masonry blocks made of rock and cement about two feet square and two full high.
Nobody knew what was in the buildings until they were tom down and the blocks were left standing.
Over the years they have deteriorated and fallen apart. Some were knocked down by cattle. I only know of one that is still standing.
No one really knew why the soldiers were sent here. We know the first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945. The local people who had a radio or subscribed to a newspaper, said they were looking for uranium. Uranium was important for the making of atomic bombs. It was also said they were recording earthquakes.
