One last thing: Mr. Bill Tieckelmann writes that I have twice misattributed a* quote to Mr. Mark Twain. Mr. Tieckelmann says that the quote, “a man educated beyond his intelligence,” was “actually written by Brander Matthews, an American author and educator.” Well, Brander Matthews was a good friend of Twain’s. Whether or not he considered himself an educator is something I don’t know, but I do know that he was best known as a drama critic and was a founder of the Player’s Club, along with Twain, the great actor Joseph Jefferson and others. Twain, the older man, most likely used the phrase first when discussing the presidential race of 1884. A group calling themselves the Mugwumps^ although normally Republicans, were supporting the Democrat Cleveland because of Republican candidate James G. Blaine’s unethical behavior. Twain, himself an outspoken member of the group, said at the time in his self deprecating way, “In poli‘ tics I am a Mugwump. I am educated beyond my intelligence.”
