Howdy and Helen Holschuh are well-known longtime residents of Rappahannock County.
Howdy was bom in New York City and after two years moved to upstate New York. He attendijl Westminster College ' in New Wilmington, Pa., where he met his wife, the former Helen Stafford.
When World War II broke out, Holschuh joined the Naval Reserve and was commissioned an Ensi^rt fti 1944. He served in the Ntfval amphibious forces* in the Pacific Theatre until the end of World War II.
In July 1946, he and Helen were married in the chapel of Westminster College. They had two children, Jeanette and Steve.
Released to inactive duty, Holschuh enrolled in Stanford University, receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Journalism.
He served as a staff news writer for radio stations in San Francisco until called up for active duty in the Korean War. He was upgraded into the regular Navy and served with distinction in the Pentagon, Hawaii, Germany and Vietnam, retiring in 1972 with the rank of captain.
The Holschuhs first became property owners in Rappahannock County in 1956; with their own hands they built a cabin as a weekend getaway and vacation place while Howdy was stationed at the Pentagon.
Upon retirement, they finished the cabin into a full-time residence and became active members of the community.
