Growing conditions are necessary, since the lily bulbs must be cultivated in the fields for three and sometimes four years before they are ready to be shipped to commercial greenhouse growers.

The bulbs require constant care and attention. They are then forced under controlled conditions to bloom in time for Easter.

This is very tricky, since Easter falls on a different day each year — falling between March 22 and April 25. (It is the first Sunday that follows the first full moon after the vernal equinox.)

Another reason bulbs have to be high quality is that the flowers must bloom exactly when they’re supposed to bloom.
