The lily is mentioned numerous times in the Bible.
One of the most famous references is in the Sermon on the Mount, when Christ told his listeners, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they toil not, neither do they spin, and yet, Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like on of these”.
Tradition has it that when Christ was in the Garden of Gethsemane, white lilies sprang up where drops of Christ’s sweat fell to the ground in his final hours.
Churches continue this tradition at Easter by putting lilies on their alter and crosses to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the hope of everlasting life.
The three day period from Good Friday through Easter Sunday has become a traditional observance that Christians believe the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Christ occurred.
