As life forms in the cycle of soil health, plants are critical, both below and above ground. Plant roots release food for beneficial bacteria and fungi. The microbes, sated with these sugars and enzymes, then activate nutrients previously humusbound and unavailable.
The plants are able to feed on these nutrients and bring them to the topsoil, thus enriching it. Since plant roots are in a continual process of growing and dying off, their decay adds more organic matter and food for micro-organisms.
Of course, animals and insects feed from the plants and make their contributions, too. For the best soil, it is good to include in a planting a diverse assortment of plants, spaced densely. Plants have different root depths, different relationships with microbes and release different nutrients to the soil.
