VDOT makes use of “rainfall intensity and duration” charts to help size drainage systems. Each county has such a chart. Those for Culpeper and Rappahannock County are virtually identical. Data from a county’s “rainfall intensity and duration” chart, plus other factors, are used in a fortnula that produces an answer on the size of the drainage system needed for the type of road under study, be it an Interstate, primary, secondary, or residential road. Tons of water to be collected and dispersed might be one way to grasp what this all means.
