Times have changed. In 1975 a couple bought a simple house in Rappahannock which had beautiful views, a bam, a one-acre pond and some 30-plus acres. About 15 of those acres were cleared. They paid $70,000.
Today, in Rappahannock, that’s not even in the realm of fantasy. Right now even previously owned homes are non-existent and prices of land are sky-high and rising.
Land is still available in Rappahannock, and it is being bought and built upon for single family homes. But the homes being built are not referred to as simple. They are in keeping with the cost of the land they sit on.
According to Richie Burke of the Building Office and several of the local builders, the new homes being built now in the county are “more.” More large homes are being built, more money is being spent on them and more of the owners are emptynesters who are coming here from someplace else.
