Ideas for Permaculture are inspired by the workings of nature as well as long-term, successful and stable societies. The word “Permaculture” itself is derived from a contraction of permanent agriculture and culture.
A guild is composed of mutually beneficial plants that are multi-purpose in function. Grown together, they reduce labor, feed people and wildlife, restore and maintain environmental balance in built and cultivated areas. Although Permaculture has done much to popularize the guild concept, it has some ancient roots in indigenous land use and settlement. It is also a scientific delineation of four groups of plants which depend upon other plants to exist.
A well known Native American example of a plant guild is found in the “Three Sisters”: planting squash, beans . and corn together.
