weekenders now, hut they are planning to be “stay heres.” They are building their dream homes.

New home construction has remained “steady” over the last couple of years. In 2000 there were 67 new home permits taken out. 2001 saw 69. By the end of June, 2002, 29 new home construction permits had been taken out and July numbers are consistent with last July.

All the builders interviewed agreed with Butch Zindel’s assessment, “there’s no end in sight” in the current trend.

There are some smaller homes being built and smaller is defined as anything under 2,000 square feet. Since June, 2001 there have been 15 homes under 2,000 square feet. In that same time frame, 31 homes were over 3,000 square feet with ten of those homes over 5,000 square feet.

These “upscale” homes being built aren’^ necessarily more expensive because they’re bigger. Torfi Taylor builds in the 2,500 to 4,000 square foot range. The owners of those homes are choosing more expensive materials and upgraded features like granite counters in the kitchen
