ommended that the sheriff’s department rely more often on the technical expertise of the Virginia State Police whenever it is needed.
He also emphasized a key position of his campaign, seconded by a number of supporters, that “a minute means a lot to citizens. When the Sheriff’s Department is not responding •promptly to a citizen’s complaint, it is not being responsive to the community.”
Considerable discussion also developed around the need for greater “presence” of deputies on the rural back roads of the county. There was a general feeling that speeding and careless drivers on these generally narrower and winding roads often put people in danger.
Some members of the audience felt that that the Sheriff’s Office was neglecting the secondary roads for the greater opportunity to catch speeders on the much safer Route 211. A number of residents stated that they rarely ever see deputies on their neighborhood roads.
Other issues discussed by the candidate and his supporters included the problem of “drunk driving,” which Butler said “will not be tolerated” if he is elected sheriff. “Drunk drivers will be locked up,” he said.
