Rappahannock's Board of Supervisors was urged at its Monday meeting to consider the forthation of a county organization to purchase land to put under easement.
The idea was brought before the board by Gary Light, president of the Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance. Light said his 150 member group, whose aim is to preserve the scenic and rural character of the county," had researched organizations in other areas with similar functions and urged the board to consider such a program for Rappahannock.
Such plans, explained RCCA member Monira Rifaat, are aimed at moderate income farm families who may be targeted by developers. Under such a program, she said, the family would still own the land. Instead of donating it to the easement program though, an organization would pay the farmers to put their land under easement, generally at the cost of the land's development value.
