Virginians who serve in the

General Assembly are put into the state retirement system but legislators are paid only about $18,000 a year unless they are in leadership positions and get extra compensation.

Thus even a legislator who serves 20 years or so would get relatively little in retirement pay after his or her tenure since the amount of pay depends not only on years served but a combination of yearly high salaries.

This makes it attractive, therefore, for legislators to look to the executive branch of state
