Nutrient management planning is an activity that helps agricultural land-users identify how major fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium should be applied for crop production.
Although the technology is not limited to agricultural lands, and can be effectively applied to suburban lawns and gardens, most nutrient management planning in the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District is currently for agricultural use.
The nutrient recommendations prescribed for crops in a typical nutrient management plan are based primarily on soil tests and expected crop yields. The two main goals of nutrient management planning are to ensure that the proper rate, timing of application, and placement of nutrients will be achieved and that water quality impacts from fertilizer applications are minimized.
