of her husband Paul Reisler, songwriter and leader of the musical group TVapezoid. The play documents the lives of three women who dare to open the secret box of their lives and dare us to listen to their stories of violence, redemption and healing.
For the premiere of this new work at Ki Theatre on Saturday, Portman will weave together stories from the many plays she has written for both stage and television, along with tales from the everyday heroes and heroines she encounters in her travels throughout the country.
In previous performances on the stage, Portman told stories. In this singular appearance, she will talk about her love of stories that has impelled her career, but also share her insights into how stories are told.
Explaining the power of stories in our lives, Portman said, “Stories are the legacy of our life experiences. They are the way we build bridges across generations and differences that separate us. Stories not only give us that sense of relationship but also of community. As people begin to recognize their own stories in other people’s stories, we learn to understand and overcome those differences.”
